About the challenge

From April to June 2014 DofE participants and supporters from across the UK will be invited to ‘Flag a Munro’ to celebrate the Commonwealth Games. The project will connect DofE participants with their local heritage, encourage physical activity and recognise the significance of Scotland’s landscape.

Photos taken on  each climb will be used to compile a collage, a lasting piece of artwork to share the legacy of the challenge. The collage will be displayed at a special art exhibition in Glasgow this summer.  We will post more information about the exhibition on this blog as it approaches.

Registration opens 30th January 2014,  climbs will take place between April and June 2014. You can ‘flag’ as many Munro’s as you want – we’re trying to flag them all and we need your help!

What is a Munro?
A Munro is a mountain in Scotland with a height over 3,000 ft (914.4 m). Munros are named after Sir Hugh Munro, 4th Baronet (1856–1919), who produced the first list of such hills, known as Munros Tables, in 1891. There are currently 282 Munro, the best known Munro is Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles.

How do I get involved?

  • Tell your DofE Leader that you’re interested! Your Leader will be the one who has to register you and your group.
  • Work with your Leader to form a group of at least 4 people who want to climb with you. You can have as many more than 4 as you would like. Your group could consist of fellow DofE participants, your Leader, local DofE Manager and/or volunteers in your group.
  • Work with your Leader to choose your Munro or a couple of Munros! You can see them all here.
  • Get your Leader to sign up with the names of your group members and group name. Once registered we will send your group a participation pack which includes your flag. Permission will need to be agreed from the groups Licensed Organisation.
  • Get to the top of the Munro with the flag in any way you can – climb, bike, run - the opportunities are endless. Some Munros are accessible to participants with additional support needs. Visit www.munromagic.com to find out more about accessible Munros. You can also find Munro routes and safety information at www.munromagic.com
  • Take some  group pictures at the top of the Munro(s) with your flag and send at least 1 original image in JPEG format in to Flagamunro@DofE.org in order for your participation to be officially included  – be as creative as you can

All Young Scot NEC card holders will receive 500 Rewards points for completion of the Challenge. If you are 11-25 get your card now and if you have not already, sign up for Rewards today.
